Mike is a keyboard player with the Backyard Band and he and Shon have been together for 12 years and married for five. Between them they have three children Jasmine (15), Malik (13) and Marquise (8).
BB: Where did you meet?
Shon: (Laughs) At the Backyard Show.
Mike: Saw her at different shows. De Revolution Café, 501.
BB: Have you ever had to deal with outside forces trying to come between you?
Mike: No.
Shon: Do you mean groupies?
BB: Yes
Shon: Never had a groupie issue.
BB: Do you think it’s because you don’t indulge them?
Mike: Pretty much. I stay to myself. I don’t socialize too much.
BB: I remember you once telling me that you were reluctant to date Mike because he was in a band, what made you get over it?
Shon: Once I learned him and I knew him. He never gave me anything to question or to doubt.
BB: Do you go to his shows?
Shon: Sometimes.
BB: What makes go or not go?
Shon: Not go, I feel like that’s his place of business and I don’t want him tagging along with me to work, but sometimes I go for support. I feel that their crowd is for a younger person, and I’m a little older.
BB: How are you able to make time for family?
Mike: I don’t really go out, so when I come home I chill with family, but when I have to play, I go play.
BB: How are you able to find alone time?
Shon: We have date night.
Mike: We chill and enjoy time together when the children go to sleep.
BB: Do you have a specific night?
Mike: No.
Shon: It can be Friday or Saturday.
Mike: It’s spontaneous.
Shon: I know when Mike doesn’t play, so we’ll make it movie night or we’ll watch TV or Mike will watch reality TV with me. We used to have game night.
BB: Which one of you is most romantic?
(Both laugh.)
Mike: It might be her this week, or me next week.
Shon: I would say Michael.
BB: What’s the most romantic thing Mike’s ever done?
Shon: You know what? When he sent flowers to my job. Surprised me: Just because.
BB: You’re so sweet.
Shon: He can be.
BB: (to Mike) Your turn:
Shon: It’s so many.
Mike: Let me think.
Shon: You trying to say there is none?
Mike: I might have to come back.
Shon: How about when I took you to the Bahamas?
Mike: That will work. When she took me on vacation.
BB: What do you love most about her?
Mike: She’s very fun and spontaneous. You never know what you are going to be dealing with from one moment to the next. There’s never a dull moment.
BB: And what do you love most about Mike?
Shon: Michael is very supportive. Michael is generous. I love the fact that the Michael is all about family and he’s all about love and respect. The biggest thing for me is that when he came into my life, I had a son from a previous relationship and he accepted him as his own before we had a child together. He’s laid back and he accepts me for me and allows me to do me. He doesn’t try to change me.
